Philippines opts for Filipinnovation

The president of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, launched a national innovation strategy on Monday, coining the term "Filipinnovation" to describe the project

The strategy was launched after 10 months of consultation and has the aim of creating a culture of innovation in the country to make it more competitive.

The IP Office of the Philippines is involved in the strategy along with seven other government departments, as well as the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center from the private sector.

The strategy is a public-private partnership and covers human capital, industry and public policy and will involve different departments coordinating existing projects to create greater efficiency. These include IP Philippines’ IP Strategic Plan 2007 to 2009.

"We believe that innovation is key to our national competitiveness," said the president as she launched the strategyat a national innovation summit.

During the summit Arroyo activated an avatar of herself in the online game Second Life. It was joined by those of Department of Science and Technology secretary Estrella Alabastro and IBM executive vice-president for innovation and technology Nick Donofrio.
