EU finally signs ACTA

The European Union and 22 of its member states have signed the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) in Japan, three months after most other countries.

Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States signed the Agreement in October. Switzerland, the EU and Mexico did not, largely because certain internal processes had not been completed.

In the EU, the European Parliament had not debated the Agreement. It did so in November, approving it, and now the Parliament just has to vote on it once more before June 2012.

Mexico and Switzerland have yet to sign, and Mexico looks unlikely to do so for the moment. See Managing IP's interview with the head of Mexico's IP office for more details.
