Managing IP's Japanese Buyers' Guide is a useful resource for Japanese businesses with interests in other markets. This year's supplement covers a number of jurisdictions, including India, China, the Philippines, Thailand and South Korea. Articles aim to create a lucid picture of dynamic IP landscapes.

A particularly exciting new development outlined in this supplement is the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) established by Japan and India. This allows Japanese companies to seek accelerated patent prosecution in India and vice versa. The pieces in this supplement indicate that India is showing increasing efficiency in proceedings before the Indian Patent Office and the Intellectual Property Appellate Board. Articles further note that India is fostering an innovator-friendly IP environment. Standard essential patents (SEPs) and computer-related inventions, topics of importance around the world, are also preoccupying Indian courts.

SEPs and fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms in licensing contracts are discussed in the write-up on South Korea. This looks in depth at Qualcomm's SEP policy and licensing disputes with various businesses, including Samsung and Apple. On the subject of licensing, the piece on licensing contracts in the Philippines clearly lays out the rules around non-compete clauses, terms and conditions and essential provisions.

For those interested in the Chinese market, the piece on China details patterns in the field of trademark and patent applications and changes in the law. It also looks at disputes and the role non-pracitising entities play in IP litigation. It will greatly assist those who want more clarity and information on the Chinese IP terrain.

The article on Thailand is extremely relevant. It discusses the burgeoning business of counterfeit face masks in Thailand in light of COVID-19. It has become imperative for brands designing face masks to ensure that they protect their trademarks through registration. If not, they will have to seek recourse to criminal law.

Also included in this supplement are IP Stars' patent rankings for a number of jurisdictions, including China, France, India, Mexico and the US. The rankings are based on thorough and detailed research. These tables will be very helpful for Japanese practitioners seeking assistance from firms in countries with which they are not familiar.

This supplement provides a key insight into areas as diverse as face mask counterfeiting, SEPs and the PPH programme. I am therefore sure that there will be something useful for all Japanese companies looking to leverage IP in other jurisdictions around the world.
