Why open source makes commercial sense

A growing number of high-tech companies that built their businesses on the back of proprietary IP are experimenting with open-source. Mark Kenrick explains why

Nokia both impressed and startled the market with its decision back in 2008 to acquire Symbian and take the mobile phone operating system open source. Sure enough, in February of this year – and ahead of schedule – the newly created Symbian Foundation made a version of the Symbian code base available under an Eclipse public licence....
