The USPTO has agreed a five-year lease for a 31,000 square foot space in Detroit to house the first USPTO satellite office.
The office will be located at 300 River Place Drive in Detroit, Michigan. The building, listed on the National Historic Registry, was the former home to Parke-Davis Laboratories as well as the Stroh’s Brewery Headquarters, according to a USPTO release.
The Office plans to hire more than 100 patent examiners for the new office – there will be no trade mark examiners in the Detroit location.
The new location will be named the Elijah J McCoy United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO-Detroit Office) and will open no later than July this year.
Vacancy announcements for patent examiner positions will be posted this spring. Prospective employees should email detroithiring@uspto.gov for more information.
The America Invents Act calls for the USPTO to open two additional satellite offices within the next three years, “subject to available resources”.
The Office is accepting public comments on potential locations for the remaining offices. Comments should be submitted by January 30 to satelliteoffices@uspto.gov.
