Russia’s trade mark boom revealed

23 August 2010

The number of trade marks registered in Russia has soared 46% in the past five years – the biggest rise of any major market – according to a new study by Thomson Reuters

The study says that 36,436 trade marks were registered in 2009. The same year saw 50,107 trade mark applications (including Madrid filings), a drop from 2008 when there were 57,112 applications.

The report says the increase, combined with Russia’s expected 4% economic growth this year, means IP professionals should pay close attention to the market: “These numbers are testament to the growing awareness of Russia as a viable market and the country’s emergence as a capital-focused, industrialized nation.”

The report, which includes analysis by Eugene Arievich and Pavel Gorokhov of Baker & McKenzie in Moscow, can be downloaded here.
