Russian court awards record copyright damages

A Moscow court has awarded a record RUR7.6 billion ($250 million) in a decision underscoring the rise in damages awards for IP infringement in the country
The Moscow Arbitration Court ruled on July 20 that Astrel, a subsidiary of AST, one of Russia’s largest book publishing companies, had infringed the copyright owned by Terra publishing house when it published books by Russian science fiction writer Alexander Belyayev.
“I think it is a conscious decision to increase penalties,” said Eugene Arievich, a partner of Baker & McKenzie in Moscow. “Maybe the courts are finally recognising the importance of copyright,” he added.
