Biography
Robert is a dual-qualified Solicitor and Trade Mark Attorney with more than 30 years’ experience across contentious and non-contentious intellectual property matters. His particular specialism is the strategic management of trade mark and design portfolios, helping businesses protect their rights while rationalising portfolios to reduce unnecessary costs and deliver greater commercial value.
Robert co-founded Sipara in 2010, having previously been a Partner and Head of the Global Trade Marks Group at Rouse. He has extensive experience representing IP owners before the UK Intellectual Property Office and European trade mark authorities, and has appeared before the Appointed Person and handled appeals from the former OHIM Board of Appeal to the European General Court.
Robert has particular expertise across the retail, FMCG, entertainment, publishing and pharmaceutical sectors, advising clients on the development, protection, management and enforcement of their intellectual property rights. His approach combines strategic portfolio management with a strong understanding of clients’ commercial objectives, with a particular focus on identifying efficiencies and ensuring IP investment delivers value to the wider business.
His practice has a significant international dimension, with particular experience across Asia and the Middle East. Between 2004 and 2006, Robert worked in Dubai, acting for international brand owners on anti-counterfeiting matters and advising Middle East-based businesses on protecting their intellectual property internationally. He has also handled a wide range of IP matters across Southeast Asia, including international portfolio management, registration and enforcement.
Robert has also played an active role in the wider trade mark profession. Following his return to the UK, he sat on the Council of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys, now the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys, and chaired its Education & Training Committee between 2006 and 2010.
Robert began his career in 1993 at Barker Brettell, where he trained and qualified as a Trade Mark Attorney, before joining S J Berwin, where he subsequently trained as a solicitor within its Intellectual Property department.
