Montserrat holds a MSc in Chemistry. She has a strong background in organic chemistry and a deep practical understanding of the field, having worked for 12 years in the Pharmaceutical Industry, 10 of them as head of the R&D department in a pharmaceutical company. In that position, she was also responsible for the company’s patent issues. In 2002 she took up the patent profession full time at the Patent Centre of the University of Barcelona and, after a fairly short time, also joined ZBM Patents & Trademarks. She became a partner of ZBM in 2005. She passed the European Qualifying Examination (EQE) in 2008 and, in 2015 she obtained the European Patent Litigation Certificate.
She has extensive experience in searching, patent drafting and prosecution, and in preparing risk of infringement and validity opinions. Currently, a significant part of her work relates to oppositions and appeals at the EPO.
Since 2002 Montserrat has regularly participated in lectures, seminars, and courses on patent matters. She has been a tutor on the EQE training course organized by the Patent Centre of the University of Barcelona, where she is also a professor. She is also tutor in the Barcelona CEIPI course in European Patent Law.
