Mexico makes Madrid official

Mexico has deposited its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol with WIPO, making it the 89th member of the international trade mark registration system

The country approved accession in April this year. The treaty will take effect on February 19 2013. Mexico is the fourth Spanish-speaking country to join the system.

WIPO’s director general, Francis Gurry, congratulated the director general of Mexico’s Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), José Rodrigo Roque Díaz, noting that IMPI is among the top 15 offices by number of trade mark applications worldwide. Roque spoke with Managing IP last year about some of the challenges of implementing the Madrid system in Mexico.

Mexico’s next challenge will be to implement a trade mark opposition system to help deal with with the influx of new applications under Madrid.
