I will be going to the INTA Annual Meeting for the first time this year. I've heard it can be pretty daunting. How can I make the most of the meeting while retaining my sanity?
The in-house counsel
I have attended the INTA Annual Meeting both as a lawyer in private practice, and as in-house counsel.
While both types of attendees go to INTA to meet with people that they have existing relationships with, the biggest difference is that a private practice lawyer is focused on building relationships that may generate new business for their firm. An in-house lawyer, on the other hand, will probably be interested in meeting and assessing firms in various countries where their company requires legal support.
For in-house counsel, there is no shortage of invitations to the many parties, dinners and functions hosted by law firms present at INTA. I typically get six or seven invites a day, and try to attend those functions hosted by counsel that I have an existing relationship with.
