Utynam would like to believe that Joseph Mbeh is not a trade mark squatter. His attempted registration of the trade mark Blue Ivy Carter NYC, however, four days after singer Beyoncé gave birth to a baby by that name (without the 'NYC'), gives rise to suspicions.

The fashion designer filed his application on January 11. Beyoncé and her husband, rapper Jay-Z, did not file their own application with the USPTO until January 26, through Beyoncé's company BGK Trademark Holdings. Mbeh, who filed in classes aimed at producing children's clothes under the brand, issued a statement as soon as his registration was rejected, hastily explaining that he had only intended to pitch the idea to Mr and Mrs Z. There were several apologies.
