Icann may increase TM protection in gTLDs - Pritz

Icann may have to implement more mechanisms to protect trade mark owners in the new gTLD space, vice president of stakeholder relations Kurt Pritz said yesterday
Pritz told Managing IP that he believed the existing protection measures were complete. But he said the new public comment period on “perceived defensive registrations” could force Icann to strengthen IP protection mechanisms.
“The comment period makes sure people know what the existing RPMs are but it also means people can provide ideas, which may be then be incorporated. We will look at the comments and, yes, more measures could be one of them,” he said.
On Monday Icann opened the public comment period for defensive applications. Pritz said it addresses the perception among some parties that they will have to apply for a gTLD just to protect their brands. He said trade mark owners can use a legal rights objection ,...
