Australia has halted inquiries into the controversial topics of gene patents and plain packaging for cigarettes because of the indecisive general election
On August 26 Senator Rachel Siewart, chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs, announced that the Senate had decided to end both inquiries but may reconsider the issues if they are referred again.
The decision comes after an inconclusive general election in which both the Labor Party and the opposition Liberal/National coalition won 72 seats. Both party leaders are trying to form a minority government.
