ACTA will not be signed in Japan, says USTR

A report that the Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) could be signed in Japan next month is incorrect, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR)

Nefeterius Akeli McPherson, the USTR's senior media affairs liaison, told Managing IP that a report by a Japanese news agency indicating the agreement is likely to be signed in Tokyo in September is incorrect.

"We plan to provide a period for input from the public after the negotiations are concluded and before the United States signs the agreement. Thus, participants in the negotiations will not be signing the agreement in Tokyo," said McPherson in an email sent to Managing IP.

The negotiating parties will meet in Tokyo next month and said they are committed to "resolving remaining substantive issues at that round".

However, they agreed to publicly release the full text of the agreement before it is signed.
