India expected to join Madrid this year

The upper house of India’s parliament has passed a bill paving the way for the country to join the Madrid Protocol

The Rajya Sabha passed the Trade Marks (Amendment) Bill 2009 on Tuesday this week.

This means the parliamentary procedure regarding the Protocol is complete and the government can finalise the implementing rules.

Pravin Anand, of Anand & Anand in Delhi, told Managing IP this could be done reasonably quickly, and a membership date should be announced in the country's Gazette soon.

"The office just needs time to complete the rules and machinery, and designate the officers. I expect they will be ready about three months from now," he said.
