ISPs and copyright owners slam anti-piracy code

Internet service providers and consumer groups have told the UK communications regulator that it needs to rethink its plans for enforcing a law to control piracy on the web

The Digital Economy Act, which came into force in April, required Ofcom to draw up a code of practice for ISPs setting out how they should help tackle online copyright infringement by sending warning notices to subscribers suspected of breaking the law.

The communications watchdog launched a public consultation on a draft code at the end of May, which lasted for two months. Now it has published the responses that it received.

Many consumer rights groups have expressed concern about how the proposals could affect internet users. The Citizen's Advice Bureau says that unless copyright owners are obliged...
