Companies can save a lot of money by outsourcing their IP work, but it takes time and effort to get the process right. Peter Ollier assesses the options

Outsourcing is not a popular word. Its mention brings to mind images of tightly packed call centres full of downtrodden employees performing menial tasks for pitiful wages. Few people would associate the term with highly educated graduates working in modern offices with canteens and chill-out areas who are earning more than lawyers their own age.

But that is the reality of the IP outsourcing industry in India. Rahul Jindal, senior manager in the patent asset management department for CPA India, formerly Intellevate, is one such employee. A computer science engineer, he joined the company in January 2006 and is now managing a team of 13 in the company's Noida office that includes several PhDs. He is just one of many Indians who would never have guessed when they graduated from the country's top legal and scientific universities that they would go into the outsourcing profession.
