Microsoft's IP plans under the spotlight
Interview: As Microsoft's global vice-president of IP and licensing, Horacio Gutierrez plays an integral role in protecting the company's IP rights
Microsoft's IP practices have taken centre stage lately, the result of the company's recent announcement on interoperability and its nasty antitrust problems with the European Commission. In February, the software developer made a number of commitments aimed at making its products more interoperable with those of its competitors: it pledged to ensure open connections and promote data portability for its high volume products, enhance Microsoft's support for industry standards and foster a more open engagement with the software industry in general, as well as the open source software community in particular. But the announcement alternately dubbed "remarkable" and "broad-reaching" by Microsoft executives was dismissed by many in the IP community as an exercise in public relations.
