Biography

With more than 25 years of experience in the industry, including three years as a Patent Examiner in the Australian Patent Office, Martin has a deep understanding of how the Australian patent system works. Martin enjoys assisting clients in identifying valuable IP in their businesses and developing strategies with them to best protect their position.

While being very practical in his approach, Martin is also very active in educating people on IP matters. He was a regular guest lecturer for the Masters of Science and Technology Commercialisation course run by the University of Adelaide for 10 years and speaks at events for lawyers, academia and business groups, including IP conferences in Australia and overseas. Martin also holds the position of Casual Academic with Flinders University, where he presents on patent law and practice, to law students studying the Intellectual Property elective. He is also responsible for Madderns’ in-house training courses for trainee attorneys and is involved in organising regular educational sessions to maintain the high quality of IP knowledge for all of Madderns’ attorneys and support staff.

Martin was listed in the 2013 edition of Asialaw’s Leading Lawyers publication recognising the most outstanding intellectual property lawyers and patent attorneys in the Asia-Pacific region. The respected international journal, Managing Intellectual Property, has also listed Martin as a patent “IP Star” every year since 2014.

Martin also leads the firm’s practice relating to China, having a keen interest in the region developed through his many years of training in and teaching Kung Fu. Martin has travelled to China several times for work and has trained in Hong Kong on many occasions.
