Biography

Martin was appointed the Senior Partner in 2023 at J A Kemp. He also leads the firm’s Engineering and IT Group.

With over 25 years’ experience, Martin advises on a broad range of technologies in the electrical, software, manufacturing and mechanical engineering fields, including marine engineering and agricultural machinery. He has particular expertise in materials-related inventions that span engineering and chemistry, such as packaging plastics, ceramics, metals, composites and semiconductors.

Martin has a strong interest in cleantech and acts for clients ranging from start-ups to multinationals in areas such as LEDs, wave and wind energy, photovoltaics, recycling, and sustainable transport and water systems. His client base spans the UK, Continental Europe and Japan, where he makes regular visits.

He is experienced in patent drafting, prosecution, freedom to operate and enforcement, and frequently appears in contentious proceedings before the European Patent Office. His litigation work includes complex oppositions involving prior use and witness testimony. Martin holds the Higher Courts Litigation Certificate and is qualified to litigate IP cases before the UK’s higher courts and the Unified Patent Court.

Known for his commercially focused advice, Martin works closely with inventors, from Nobel Prize-winning academics to in-house R&D teams, to develop IP strategies aligned with business objectives.
