The UK is adding an IP attaché covering south-east Asia to its existing representatives in Brazil, India and China, the IP minister Lord Younger announced today

Christabel Koh joins in Singapore. She has most recently been working at the IP Office of Singapore and the IP Academy.

Speaking at the CIPA Congress in London today, Lord Younger (right) said the IP attachés “help us to broaden bilateral dialogue with local IP agencies” as well as helping businesses to grow in emerging economies.

He added that the three existing attachés have had contact with more than 2000 businesses, with IP assets worth more than £181 million.

They have actually advised more than 630 businesses with IP assets worth £165 million. Of these, 55% have concerned trade marks, 11& copyright and 11% patent.

They have also held 583 IP awareness and training sessions.

Younger also said he was “delighted” by the appointment of Mike Weatherley MP as special adviser on IP to the prime minister: “He is a welcome addition to our enforcement efforts.” (Read an interview with Weatherley.)

He also paid tribute to the IP-specialist judges for “streamlining case management” and confirmed that the UK will host a joint international summit on IP enforcement in June next year, “showcasing the UK as an international centre for the IP industries and enforcement”.
