Politicians win more power to block new gTLDs

Politicians wanting to block new gTLDs have greater powers to object to them in the latest version of Icann’s Applicant Guidebook, published today

Icann produced its ninth Guidebook for gTLD applicants who from today can finally start to apply for their desired strings. The application period is open for three months.

Today’s Guidebook makes a number of minor changes from September’s edition. One significant change is that it appears to hand more power to Icann’s Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC), particularly representatives from smaller countries.

The GAC will no longer have to clarify how it achieves consensus before asking Icann to block gTLDs...
