Exclusive: EC changes endanger patent progress

As discussions over patent and trade reforms in Europe reach a critical stage, the departure of key staff could cause more delays

Managing IP has learned that Oliver Varhelyi, head of the industrial property unit, is leaving his post today to work at the Hungarian permanent representation to the EU.

His boss Margot Fröhlinger - who is widely credited with driving discussions on an EU unitary patent and unified litigation system - is also expected to leave the department early in 2012.

Varhelyi has been at the centre of negotiations on the unitary patent and unified patent system over the past few years. He spoke on the latest developments at the CIPA Congress last month.
