Ryuji Ota handles a broad range of intellectual property matters, including domestic and foreign patent applications, oppositions, appeals, infringement and validity opinions, and infringement cases. His main technical fields are chemistry, materials, mechanical engineering, and designs, and he is able to handle matters involving multiple technical disciplines by understanding the underlying technology from a broad perspective.
Ryuji studied industrial chemistry at Doshisha University and received his master’s degree in Human and Environmental Studies from Kyoto University. His primary field of study was organic chemistry, with particular emphasis on organic synthesis and organometallic chemistry.
Before entering the field of intellectual property, Ryuji worked for seven years in the R&D division of a textile manufacturer. During that time, he was engaged in research on textile processing technology, studies to understand the mechanisms by which new textile materials manifest their properties, the search for new applications of microfiber materials, and the development of textile materials for medical use. Through this R&D experience, he developed the ability to understand technologies not only from the perspective of the chemical properties of materials, but also in terms of processing technologies, product structures, and practical applications.
In his current IP practice, Ryuji draws on this academic background and R&D experience to advise on patent matters involving the intersection of chemistry, materials, and mechanical engineering. He provides practical advice on patent prosecution, patent strategies, opinions, oppositions, appeals, and dispute-related matters, based on a careful understanding of the technical essence of each invention.
Ryuji is also qualified to represent clients in infringement litigation in collaboration with an attorney-at-law. He is a member of the Japan Patent Attorneys Association, INTA, AIPPI, and APAA.
