Peter-Michael primarily focuses on patent law, but also advises and represents national and international companies in the areas of trademark (he represented the plaintiff in ECJ "Thomson Life"), unfair competition and utility model law. He mostly handles patent infringement cases before national courts throughout Germany, often with parallel proceedings around the world. He has particular experience with standard essential patents and handled prominent cases which led to some of the first German judgements post Huawei v ZTE/ECJ, including connected cars. He and his team obtained the 1st German AASI against a Chinese ASI.
He is regularly involved in opposition and nullity proceedings before the European Patent Office and national patent courts. Since 1996, he has handled a remarkable number of complex patent infringement proceedings in the areas of telecommunications (inter alia LTE, UMTS, GSM/GPRS, AMR-WB, EVS, WiFi and Bluetooth standards), electronics, mechanical engineering, medical devices, biotechnology, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, automotive.
He handled many prominent proceedings and legal disputes that led to landmark decisions by the German Federal Supreme Court, e.g. regarding standard essential patents and indirect patent infringement.
