Biography

Nick is a partner in our life sciences and chemistry team in London with over 30 years’ experience. His practice ranges from devising global prosecution filing strategies, supporting patent litigation, to advising on intellectual property aspects of company mergers and acquisitions, including due diligence on intellectual property rights in licensing and/or corporate acquisitions, freedom-to-operate opinions, validity opinions and general counsel, as
well as drafting original patent applications. He is a Unified Patent Court (UPC) Representative.

His practice concentrates on clients at all stages in the pharmaceutical sector with diverse subject matter experience including regenerative medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genome mapping/genome sequencing and synthetic genome assembly. He has been significantly involved in patent applications relating to cloning (somatic cell nuclear transfer), stem cells, cancer immunotherapy / CAR-T cells, regenerative medicine, gene therapy, and monoclonal antibodies / novel antigen receptor proteins (IgNARs/VNARs). Additionally, he brings deep involvement in patent applications relating to controlled release / sustained release pharmaceutical formulations, genetic diagnosis, biomarkers and synthetic biology.

His European portfolio includes post-grant opposition proceedings at the EPO, contentious proceedings in other foreign jurisdictions, as well as obtaining Supplementary Protection Certificates (SPCs) for pharmaceuticals (patent term extension).

He regularly speaks at conferences on patent issues relating to patent term extension and patentability of inventions in stem cell field. He is a guest lecturer at Queen Mary University of London on the Certificate in Intellectual Property Law and MSc Management in Intellectual Property. He is the author of chapters in guides on international protection of intellectual property rights in the Life Sciences and Software fields.
