Fröhlinger to speak at Patent Reform Forum

Margot Fröhlinger, principal director for patent law and international affairs at the EPO, will give a keynote address at Managing IP’s European Patent Reforum Forum in Munich next month

The one-day Forum takes place at the Hotel Vier Jahrezeiten Kempinski in Munich on September 19.

Fröhlinger (right), who joined the EPO last year, was formerly a senior official at the European Commission in Brussels, which she joined in 1987.

From 2007 to 2012, she headed the intellectual property department at the Commission’s Internal Market directorate, where negotiations on an EU patent took up much of her time.

She played a vital role in the discussions that led to agreement on the Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court, and has a unique insight on how they will work.

The EPO will be responsible for examining Unitary Patent applications as well as administering renewals and maintaining the register. Speaking to Managing IP recently, EPO President Benoît Battistelli said the Office’s systems would be ready for the new work as soon as next year.

Managing IP’s European Patent Reform Forum features panels on all aspects of the Unitary Patent and UPC, including how the Court will work, the rules of procedure, bifurcation and the role of the CJEU. The day will culminate with a wide-ranging roundtable discussion featuring in-house counsel and practitioners from various countries.

More information on confirmed speakers and delegates, and the venue, are available on Managing IP’s website.
