Biography

Stuart is a Chartered UK and European Patent Attorney and Director of Cameron IP specialising in chemistry and life sciences.

He has particular experience in pharmaceuticals, industrial chemistry, chemical engineering, formulation chemistry, medical devices, vaccines, coatings and films, and transdermal patches.

Stuart’s areas of IP expertise include drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the UKIPO and EPO, advising on IP strategies and lifecycle management, and global portfolio management.

He has advised some of the largest corporations in the US and Europe and understands the practical challenges associated with managing portfolios in-house, and the need to work closely with in-house teams, helping them to work within their budgets.

Stuart is also highly experienced in contentious matters, having represented his clients in multiple EPO opposition and appeal proceedings, and in contentious matters before the UKIPO and UK courts. He is an IP Patent Litigator and authorised Unified Patent Court Representative.

He is also an expert in obtaining Supplementary Protection Certificates in Europe.

Stuart regularly attends international IP conferences including APAA and BIO, where he places great importance on meeting with clients and global associates in person, in order to strengthen and deepen relationships. Clients comment that he is a pleasure to work with and that he is very quickly able to distil the essence of a problem.

Stuart assists the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys the UK, as the Chair of the Patents Committee, and as a member of a delegation which meets regularly with the UKIPO to discuss practice issues.

He also sits on the Firm’s Operations Board.

Outside of work, Stuart enjoys getting out on his motorbike and spending time with family.

Recent matter/case highlights
  • Example 1 – Portfolio Management - Stuart manages patent portfolios for several clients in the chemical and life science space. He specialises in guiding the clients through the complexities of patent portfolio management. He assists the firm’s clients in building, protecting, and optimising their portfolios so that they align with their commercial objectives. Stuart’s expertise lies in identifying high-value patents, streamlining costs, and ensuring portfolios remain strategically
    focused.
  • Example 2 – Contentious Proceedings (offensive) - Stuart represents a UK-based company in challenging the grant of a competitor’s European patent. He provides clear, practical guidance that aligns the opposition strategy with the broader commercial objectives of the company.
  • Example 3 – Contentious Proceedings (defensive) A complex case was recently transferred to Stuart Forrest at Cameron IP to handle a hearing before the Board of Appeal (BoA) at the
EPO. The matter was taken over after the final written submissions had already been filed, presenting procedural challenges that required careful management. Despite an initial preliminary opinion from the BoA indicating that refusal was the most likely outcome, Cameron IP secured a favourable result for its client. We achieved a claim scope broader than the BoA had signalled it was prepared to allow, ensuring stronger protection for the client’s innovation. The case has not yet proceeded to grant, and Cameron IP continues to represent the client in ongoing disputes with the Examining Division regarding proposed amendments to the application. Stuart’s expertise in opposition and appeal proceedings remains central to navigating this complex process and safeguarding the client’s commercial interests.
  • Example 4 - UK Infringement Action - Cameron IP was instructed to represent several companies in defence of a patent infringement action. Stuart robustly defended their clients’ position and through carefully prepared submissions, Cameron IP was able to avoid trial and secure settlement. The outcome delivered was a swift and cost-effective resolution, and our client was very pleased with the result.
