Makoto Asano is a partner and head of the Chemical department at Kyowa Patent and Law Office.
Before joining Kyowa, Makoto Asano worked in the Research and Development department of TEIJIN LIMITED as an engineer for five years.
In 2001, he passed the Japan Patent Attorney examination and joined Kyowa. He became a partner in 2015.
At Kyowa, his duties are mainly acquiring and maintaining of intellectual property rights in Japan and abroad, as well as preparing expert opinions and consulting with regard to patent rights in Japan and abroad. Along with our Attorneys at Law, he has worked in numerous chemical lawsuits.
In one of the litigation cases he cooperated, he represented our client (the defendant) in two patent infringement cases and seven provisional injunction cases filed by the plaintiff before the Tokyo District Court where approximately 10 billion yen were sought in damages; the case was successfully concluded with a settlement in favor of the defendant, without any payment from the defendant or impact on the manufacture and sale of the subject products.
His expertise also covers cutting-edge technologies such as materials informatics, which uses AI technology to speed up and streamline material development.
