Biography

Karin Berger is a German Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney and a partner at RGTH. She has extensive experience in intellectual property law, with a practice focused primarily on patent prosecution, opposition and appeal proceedings, as well as contentious patent matters.
Berger is admitted to practice before the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA), the German Federal Patent Court, the European Patent Office (EPO), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the Unified Patent Court (UPC) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). She is also an expert and member of the arbitration board of the Patent Mediation and Arbitration Centre (PMAC) of the UPC.

Her practice encompasses patent prosecution, opposition and appeal proceedings before the DPMA, Federal Patent Court and EPO. She also advises clients on nullity actions before the German Federal Patent Court and the Federal Court of Justice, as well as patent infringement matters.
Berger’s technical expertise spans a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, including physics, mechanical engineering, pharmaceuticals, electrical engineering and software-related inventions. She has particular experience in technologies involving laser and optical systems, medical devices, vehicle engineering, biopharmaceutical products, renewable energy technologies, electrical drives, climate control systems and digital therapeutics.

In addition to patent matters, she advises clients on trade mark and design protection, including filing strategies, opposition proceedings and portfolio management. Her practice also includes licensing agreements and German employee invention law.

Before entering the legal profession, Berger studied Physics at Heidelberg University, specialising in experimental physics, optics and medical physics, before completing further studies in Medical Physics through the University of Mannheim and the National University of Singapore.
