Jakob has in-depth legal, technical and commercial experience, having drafted and managed patent portfolios for many chemical, life sciences and engineering companies, spin-outs, start-ups and universities. Jakob has over 20 years of experience in the patent profession, including in-house at a major chemical corporation, and is the head of the firm’s Chemistry team.
With a strong grasp of legal and technical details as a foundation, Jakob works to identify commercial goals and then helps clients meet them by employing his skills in creating, attacking, managing and understanding intellectual property protection. He has particular experience of managing and consolidating large patent portfolios.
In addition to drafting, prosecution, and strategic management of intellectual property portfolios, a particular specialism of Jakob’s practice lies in European Patent Office opposition and appeal proceedings. With many years of experience, Jakob is adept at handling oral proceedings and has a deep knowledge of European case law and practice.
Jakob has also been responsible for technical and strategic input in several High Court patent disputes, as well as litigation, in the US and Germany. Additionally, Jakob has run proceedings before the UK Intellectual Property Office and guided clients through mediation and settlement. Freedom to operate projects, including for chemical processes, complex engineering products, medical devices and pharmaceuticals are another important part of Jakob’s practice.
