In an announcement to her colleagues, Cohn said that she would be stepping down from the USPTO at the end of this calendar year.

She has agreed to continue to serve through the end of the year and to aid in identifying a potential successor to her post.

Cohn had faced scrutiny this summer over charges of nepotism following the hiring of the fiancé of a family member.
