VeriSign has withdrawn its request to introduce a new suspension system for abusive domains and a malware scanning service.
The registry for .com, .net and .name domains proposed two mechanisms to Icann– removing so-called non-legitimate sites upon request from law enforcement and scanning sites for viruses and other malpractices.
VeriSign has not stated why the request has been withdrawn, but the suspension mechanism had been criticised by groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a group that seeks to protect consumers’ rights.
