Data – Samsung most active PTAB petitioner in June with 23 IPRs

Managing IP’s analysis of Docket Navigator data on June’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board petitioners, patent owners, law firms and attorneys reveals Samsung was comfortably the most-active petitioner. But it was also a busy month for automotive inter partes review petitions

Samsung filed 23 petitions at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board in June, well ahead of second-placed Toshiba, TRW Automotive and Verizon, which each had 10.

The petitions Samsung was involved in were filed against patents owned by Gold Charm, IXI, Parthenon Unified Memory Architecture, and Elbrus International.

Toshiba was involved in 10 of the same petitions as Samsung, all challenging Gold Charm patents. Gold Charm, a subsidiary of Hon Hai, filed three lawsuits against Mitsubishi, Funai and Toshiba in the District of Delaware in June last year alleging infringement of display technology patents.

TRW Automotive is the most active petition filer in the automotive industry. Its 10 IPR petitions in June brings its total number of petitions filed to 50. All 10 of the June petitions challenged patents owned by Magna Electronics.

These petitions helped Magna take the top spot for the most-targeted company during the month, with four IPR petitions from Valeo North America pushing the number of petitions against its patents to 14 during the month. Magna sued TRW, Valeo and Hyundai in 2013.

Other automotive companies were busy during June. The third-most-targeted company was Joao Control & Monitoring Systems, with nine IPR petitions targeting its patents filed by Nissan and Terremark North America.

The automotive industry has been increasingly active at the PTAB. In April, the most-targeted company was Signal IP, which has sued a number of car makers.

The majority of automotive litigation involves patents focused on safety or car multimedia/infotainment. The car sellers tend to be the ones that are sued rather than the suppliers. (See our Automotive industry tries to put the brakes on NPEs article for more details).

The second-most targeted company in June was Gold Charm, which had 11 petitions challenging its patents in total.

Finnegan was comfortably the most-popular law firm for filing petitions in June. Its 22 petitions filed were well ahead of Sterne Kessler’s 13 and Fish & Richardson’s 12.

We have listed the law firms listed as representing the patent owners on June PTAB filings. However, there is a lag before these are named so this list is not for every petition that was filed during the month.
