Leading PCT firms, tribal sovereign immunity, AI, trade dress litigation – our latest issue

The Year-End issue of Managing IP includes our PCT Leaders Report 2017, how AI will change trade mark law, damages in China patent litigation, recent trade dress trends, an analysis of district court stays pending PTAB review, and whether tribal sovereign immunity will be a wrecking ball to the IPR system

MIP Year End issueManaging IP’s Year-End issue is now online, and includes some interesting exclusive research from our IP Stars team. The PCT Leaders Report 2017 reveals the top filing firms for international PCT applications between 2014 and 2016 in 19 of the most important patenting jurisdictions.

The issue’s cover story analyses how big a threat the use of tribal sovereign immunity is to the PTAB in the US. The lawyer behind Allergan’s controversial transfer of patents to a Native American tribe says he is “dedicated to taking a wrecking ball to the IPR system” and that others are “lining up to do deals”. I assess whether the PTAB will rule that sovereign immunity applies in these types of deals.

Elsewhere, we have articles on how artificial intelligence will change trade mark law, recent patent damages developments in China, analysis of district court stays pending PTAB review in the past 12 months, and trends in trade dress litigation.

Not done there, we have our regular Utynum’s Heirs column noting IP curiosities. This month’s column includes harsh words from a judge for Uber’s lawyers, a ruling on London cabs, a dispute between two IP firms with Fish in their names, and news of an anti-PTAB protest at the US Supreme Court.

The issue also features our international briefings, bringing updates from around the globe.

This was my first issue as managing editor. I hope you enjoy it.
