Hogan Lovells lawyers celebrate winning the Global Firm of the Year award |
The firm was recognised for its work in all areas of IP and across its offices in Europe, the United States and Asia.
It acts in multi-jurisdictional patent litigation for clients such as HTC, Hoffman-LaRoche and Eli Lilly and manages trade mark portfolios for companies such as Mars, Frito Lay and Lego. It is also active in domain name issues, including the launch of new gTLDs.
The firm also won an award tonight in the Europe trade marks category.
The evening saw more than 60 awards presented to firms from 40 countries at a dinner at the Dorchester on Park Lane.
Among the biggest winners were Bird & Bird, which won four awards: firm of the year in Singapore, Sweden and the UK (trade mark contentious work) and in the pan-European category for patent work.

Baker & McKenzie won in Russia, Thailand, Indonesia (through member firm Hadiputranto, Hadinoto & Partners) and Europe for copyright.
Hoyng Monegier, a firm that was founded in January 2011 by former European partners of Howrey, won a new award for emerging IP firm. It also won the Belgium contentious category.
A number of other special awards were presented. The in-house team of the year went to toy company Lego, in recognition of its innovative licensing strategy and enforcement of its trade mark and design rights. The company is also one of the biggest and most successful users of the UDRP system for resolving domain name disputes.
Two outstanding individual achievement awards were presented.
One went to former INTA president Gerhard Bauer of Daimler, who was recognised for his leadership and education work in the trade mark area. As he was unable to travel to London, INTA Board member Anna Carboni of Redd collected the award on his behalf.
Carboni said: “Gerhard’s contribution to the Association and to the profession is indeed outstanding as he continues to help build, promote and internationalise INTA.”

Bird & Bird won four awards |
The other outstanding achievement award was presented to Sir Robin Jacob, Hugh Laddie professor at the Institute of Brand and Innovation Law and a former High Court and Court of Appeal judge in the UK.
He was commended for his work in streamlining litigation and promoting pan-European cooperation in patent law, as well as his carefully argued, thorough, balanced and often entertaining judgments.
Among phrases he is remembered for are the warning about “the commodore steering the fleet on to the rocks” and the definition of the person skilled in the art as a “nerd” or “assembly of nerds” but not “a complete android”.
More than 200 people attended the dinner in London. Managing IP’s awards for the United States and Canada will be presented at a ceremony in Washington DC on March 27.
