Cindy Bian is a patent lawyer with Chinese telecoms company Huawei. She told Emma Barraclough about her role, why Chinese IP owners need to defend their rights, and how Huawei chooses its external advisers
I joined Huawei in 2005. I had worked as a legal assistant before that but I always wanted to do IP. So when I was offered a job with Huawei I took it – I didn’t even know how much money they were offering!I spent three months in Munich in 2008 and then I was based there from 2009 until 2012 as one of Huawei’s patent counsel working on European prosecution and litigation. We’ve been involved in a number of lawsuits in Europe. Most have been in Germany but we have also litigated in other places. Lessons learnedMy advice to other Chinese companies is not to be afraid of litigation. Accept it as a part of business.
