PCT’s crowd sourcing system goes live

Peter Leung, Hong Kong

Third parties can now electronically submit observations on PCT applications, including references to relevant prior art

The system, which went live on July 2, is connected to the Patentscope search service. Michael Richardson, deputy director of the PCT business development division at WIPO, said that this makes it easier for the public to find new applications and to submit their observations accordingly.

“The main goal of the system is to improve the quality of the search information that comes out of the international phase of the PCT and is received by the national offices”, explained Richardson. “While the quality of the international prior art searches is already good, it can never be perfect.”

“There will always be prior art that only people working in the particular field will know about.”
