From award-winning patent decisions to the Betty Boop trademark conundrum, it has been an interesting year for IP lawyers in the United States
At last week's AIPLA Annual Meeting, Blake Reese, associate corporate counsel for Google, chaired a panel discussion on the hottest IP topics of the past year.
The panel comprised Barton Showalter of Baker Botts, Joseph Welch of Pattishall McAuliffe Newbury Hilliard & Geraldson, Robert Clarida of Cowan Liebowitz & Latman, Wil Rao of McAndrews Held & Malloy, and Lateef Mtima of Howard University School of Law.
The Markey Awards
Named after the first chief judge of the Federal Circuit, the 2011 Markey Awards will be presented today to the year's most significant patent decisions. Baker Botts' Showalter says he focused on cases that were heard en banc by the Federal Circuit or argued before the Supreme Court. "We didn't categorize by subject matter areas," he says.
