Lawyers welcome corruption arrest in India

The arrest of a gold-loving deputy trade mark registrar in Chennai last week for corruption could reinvigorate the drive to clean up India’s trade mark system, said lawyers this week

Last week India's Central Bureau of Investigation, which investigates allegations of corruption, arrested N D Kasturi, the deputy register of trade marks in Chennai.

In a press release, the CBI said that it found Rs3.3 million ($73,000) in cash, fixed deposits worth Rs8.5 million ($189,000), 3.8kg of gold ornaments and ownership documents for six flats in various Indian cities.

Kasturi, who was approaching retirement, was officially arrested for possessing assets disproportionate to her known sources of income. Practitioners estimated that...
