"One of the few companies in the US that really understands pharmaceuticals" is how one client chooses to describe Morgan Lewis & Bockius. "We have worked with other law firms in the United States and Morgan Lewis really knows the industry well. Most firms claim they understand the industry, but they don't. I highly recommend them."
With Life Sciences Stars in every practice area chapter, Morgan Lewis already claims one of the most sophisticated life sciences practice groups in the country, and it is growing stronger. Key additions, especially in the pricing and reimbursement practice, have expanded the scope and depth of firm's team. For example, Donna Lee Yesner brought her practice to Morgan last year, enhancing an FDA team with industry heavyweights Kathleen Sanzo and Stephen Paul Mahinka, the latter of whom also has a well-regarded anti-trust practice.
The firm handles matters on behalf of over 900 life sciences and healthcare clients and truly has the capabilities to handle a product's full life-cycle. Furthermore, Morgan Lewis has the international presence and expertise to handle issues outside the borders of the United States. It is one more example of the breadth of offerings the firm provides its clients.
The IP practice works closely with the firm's transactional group, counseling clients on how to get the best value for their IP rights. They have a notable trademark and copyright practice, which has gained notoriety through the work of partner Michael Clayton, who comes highly recommended by a number of competing practitioners.
On the transactional side, Princeton-based Randall Sunberg and his team have taken advantage of their connections in New Jersey and actively handle licensing and collaboration deals in the pharmaceutical industry. The firm's transactional team has won the admiration of peers. "I have a lot of respect for the people at Morgan Lewis," says one competitor. "Randall Sunberg is a highly respected name."
Not to be outdone by those other big names, Morgan Lewis also has a powerful government enforcement practice. DC-based Kathleen McDermott has over 20 years of experience with compliance and enforcement matters and has experience as an Assistant US Attorney and DOJ Health Care Fraud Coordinator. McDermott is joined by Eric Sitarchuk and John Dodds in Philadelphia, both of whom have prosecutorial experience as Assistant US Attorneys. A relatively new addition to the team, Howard Young, who joined the firm in 2009, also has roughly 20 years of industry experience and counsels manufacturers on fraud and abuse and compliance issues, amongst other things.
Clients commend the firm's ability to handle their needs in a quick, realistic manner. "They are just very responsive," explains one client. "Their advice is always spot on – it's not too conservative or involves unreasonable risk. They are really terrific."
