Campinos confirmed as next EPO president

James Nurton, London

The EPO's Administrative Council has elected António Campinos to succeed Benoit Battistelli as president for a five-year term starting from July 1 2018

Campinos is now executive director of EUIPO. He moved to Alicante in 2010, having formerly headed the Portuguese national IP office.

Battistelli is retiring after serving two terms, during which he implemented reforms to the Office's procedures and the Boards of Appeals, but provoked criticism from staff and others.

This was manifest in strikes and protests, and the Council, now chaired by Christoph Ernst of Germany, will be hoping that Campinos can improve relations.

He achieved something similar, though on a smaller scale, at EUIPO where reforms made by his predecessor, Wubbo de Boer, had caused tensions with both staff and some EU member states.

In his seven years at the Office, Campinos oversaw the implementation of the EU trade mark reform and various cooperation initiatives with other offices.

Tim Moss, chief executive of the UK IPO, said:  "I welcome the election of António Campinos as the new EPO President. From his time as Executive Director of the EUIPO, he brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge of both the challenges and the opportunities that the global IP system presents. The UK IPO looks forward to working with him and his team during his tenure."

Stephen Jones, President of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, said: "CIPA enjoys a positive and productive relationship with the EPO and we look forward to this continuing under the leadership of Mr Campinos, who brings with him great experience of the global IP system. We wish him every success in his new role."

Courts grapple with scope of patent protection

The Supreme Court’s decision in Actavis v Eli Lilly introduced a doctrine of equivalents and arguably also established a doctrine of prosecution history estoppel in the UK.
