The Unitary Patent is a “wonderful tool” - Jean-Jacques Canonici, P&G

Jean-Jacques Canonici of Procter & Gamble urged patent owners to try the new Unitary Patent system, in an interview with Managing IP

Speaking at the Patent Reform Forum in Munich, Canonici said: “I hope it will be used because I fully believe it is a wonderful tool, but I have concerns about the costs.”

In particular, he said the level of renewal fees – which are now being discussed by participating member states – will be a key factor for many companies.

But he said that users bear a responsibility to try out the new system: “It would be a mistake to sit back and let others try the system. It is a joint responsibility to put some patents into the new system and that is how issues will get better resolution.”
