Indonesian ISPs to start blocking illegal music downloads

An ISP industry group will begin to block sites that allow users to illegally download music in an attempt to stem what some call a cultural lack of understanding of IP in Indonesia

The Indonesian Internet Service Provider Association (APJII) and its 200 member ISPs will start blocking websites that help users download illegal music, said the group’s chairman Sammy Pangerapan.

Lawyers in the country are somewhat sceptical about the effectiveness of the plan, citing the lack of details. The APJII has yet to provide details, including the start date and how rights holders can report infringing sites.

APJIIPrudence Jahja of Januar Jahja & Partners said that from her conversations with ISPs, she believes that the technology will be similar to that used by the government to block access to adult content sites.
