Lessons from Bloomberg: the benefits of Chinese design patents

Lawyers representing Bloomberg appeared in a Shanghai court last week, where they accused China-based Dazhihui of infringing the design of its market information computer service
Both companies sell terminals that allow users to access financial news and information. Bloomberg is the worldwide leader in the provision of market data and analysis and claims that its system with its dual-screen configuration and colour-coded keyboard is “iconic”.
Dazhihui also sells market data and analysis in China, as well as a dual-screen computer terminal with a colour keyboard. The company claims it has the largest market share in China.
Attorneys say that this is likely to be a tough case for Bloomberg, since it does not appear to have a registered design patent.
