New gTLD applicants in confidential talks at Icann meeting

The rollout of new gTLDs, IPv6 and IP protection were all on the agenda at last week’s Icann meeting in Prague. But much of the action was taking place off-stage, with gTLD applicants in secret talks over who will own which domains
As Icann revealed on June 13, there are 1,930 applications for new gTLDs. But many popular strings have more than one application, with .app for example having 13 and .home 11.
Icann’s applicant guidebook provides that where there are competing applications, parties have up to six months to decide whether they wish to pursue them or withdraw. Withdrawing would mean they get some of their fees refunded.
If there are still multiple applicants at the end of that period, the domain string will be auctioned. It is not yet clear how the auction will work or where the money will go. It has been suggested that any money raised should be donated to charity.
Applicants who spoke to Managing IP last week said that there had been many discussions between the biggest applicants for generic words such as .app, .books, .home, .music and .search.
