Singapore seeks input on its plan to become Asia’s IP hub

Peter Leung, Hong Kong

The Ministry of Law is seeking feedback from the public regarding plans to make Singapore a major centre for IP transactions and development.

In April, the Ministry of Law announced the creation of an IP steering committee to formulate the IP Hub Master Plan.

Chaired by Teo Ming Kian, chairman of MediaCorp, the committee will make recommendations on ways to develop the city-state into “a vibrant marketplace for IP transaction and commercialization” and to build “world-class IP capabilities and infrastructure”.

The committee is seeking comments and recommendations until August 31 2012. Comments may be emailed to MLAW_Consultation@mlaw.gov.sg.

Singapore has made a number of moves as part of its long-term plans to be the region’s IP hub. Recently, tax planners and valuation professionals have noted some of the advantages in locating IP rights and doing R&D in Singapore, such as generous tax benefits.
