UK grants more patents, but applications wane

The number of patents granted in the UK last year rose by more than a third, the largest leap in a decade
The UK IPO allowed 2,992 patent applications in 2011, up 29% from 2010.
Although the government is likely to welcome the rising number of patented inventions in the country, the number of companies and individuals applying to protect their inventions continued to decline. The UK IPO received 15,343 applications last year, down from 20,196 just 10 years ago.
