The two firms paid by former file-sharing company Megaupload to store users’ data have agreed to wait at least two weeks before they begin deleting the files.
US officials shut down Megaupload on January 19 and New Zealand police arrested its founder Kim Dotcom and six employees, charging them with copyright infringement.
The two hosting firms, Carpathia Hosting and Cogent Communications, said they would start deleting files this Thursday because they were no longer being paid by defunct Megaupload.
But Megaupload’s attorney Ira Rothken said he should be allowed to use the files as evidence to defend his client. And now according to Rothken, the firms have agreed to preserve the data for another two weeks.
Rothken said he will negotiate with the US government to try to stop the firms permanently deleting the files.
